Fishing in and around Drakesbad Guest Ranch
Known for its colorful native rainbow trout, the Warner Valley area of Lassen Volcanic National Park provides very satisfying fly fishing. What these smaller trout lack in size, they make up for in beauty! If catching native rainbows or the ancestors of the planted brook and brown trout (planting stopped back in the 80’s) is your passion, Drakesbad is the place for you. Whether you are an expert or just getting started in the art of fly fishing you will find expert advice and guided services from local guide Tom Maumoynier (click here for details).
Tom recommends fishing the Drakesbad area with a smaller rod (3 or 4 weight at 7.5 to 8.5 feet). Stimulators and Parachute Adams are good dry fly choices. Birds Nest and Prince Nymphs are reliable wet flies. Afternoon hatches of grasshoppers get things jumping!
In addition to fly fishing, our Activities Director will lead local fishing trips and provide instruction for children (and their parents if they wish) in streams and lakes in the Drakesbad area. The Ranch supplies the safe spinner rods and reels and although we don’t guarantee a catch, we promise a fun and memorable experience!
